Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works has taken the wraps off an experimental, air-launched unmanned aircraft system called Speed Racer that is meant to validate a new manufacturing process as much as a possible new weapon system.
A company-produced video released on the eve of the virtual Aerospace Warfare Symposium that ran Feb. 24-26 reveals a small, jet-powered unmanned aircraft system (UAS) with a hexagonal fuselage, folding and swept wings, plus two sharply canted aft dorsal tails, along with one ventral tail.

The new top-secret Unmanned Aircraft System made by the Skunk Works of Lockheed Martin might be ready for trials soon. The U.S.-made x-craft have been unequaled by its adversaries and technically superior.
It is related to such aircraft as the SR-71 Blackbird, F-117 Nighthawk, and the U-2 Dragon Lady, all top secret in classified tech. The U.S. owns these planes, and no country has replicated them, even tech stealing China.
Lockheed Martin s Skunk Works says that that they are developing a new unmanned flight vehicle called Speed Racer, which will serve as a technology demonstrator for a proprietary, end-to-end digital engineering system called StarDrive. This spy plane played a key role in many Cold War episodes.
Key point: The A-12 helped fill a missing capability as Soviet air defenses were able to threatend the U-2. Here is how the CIA used the A-12.
But the Blackbird’s was actually an enlarged evolution of the Lockheed A-12, designed for service with the Central Intelligence Agency. The single-seat A-12 could fly slightly faster and higher, but it was doomed to be replaced by its heavier Air Force spinoff.
By the late 1950s, aviation engineers knew that new Soviet surface-to-air missiles could effectively threaten high-altitude U-2 spy plane overflights of the Soviet Union. This was dramatically illustrated by the shoot down of Gary Power’s U-2 in 1960 over the Soviet Union, which triggering a humiliating political crisis. A second U-2 was shot down during the Cuban Missile Crisis an event which could have sparked a global nuclear war.
